Anonymity and yammering after such.

Wed Nov 11, 2009, 5:19 PM
  • Listening to: "Stardust Utopia"
  • Reading: "The Fellowship of the Ring"
  • Eating: So hungry, agh.
  • Drinking: I did have an eggnog latte, mmm.
I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about the kind of person I'm aiming to be in the future, or, hell, already am in a less epic sense.

Anonymity.

To be an interpreter is to not be noticed as such. You have to be a bridge, almost literally, and let people walk all over you to get where they need to go. Sure, they might occasionally admire the craftsmanship or learn in passing a little of what created such a useful thing, but that's an appreciative gesture rather than an expectant one. When I attended a comedy show the other day and the two comedians congratulated the interpreters in the front row for their hard work, I was both gratified and surprised.

Gratified because a simple thank you means a lot.

And surprised because that's a hell of a lot in the long run.

I will work with anyone from ignorant and demanding deaf individuals to patient and accepting clients. But no matter what, I will not be known. My signing, dexterity and professionalism is my barrier, shielding me from questions, the brunt of embarrassment and obligation outside of my craft.

It will be the same with my art, will it not?

I don't need to show off my figure to be happy. I don't need to spill my deepest secrets. My art will do most of the talking for me. I can conceal my face beneath my ideas, my characters, my biggest painting to my silliest doodle.

Sure, this could be the aloof, distant part of me speaking. This could be my desire to be as secretive and indirect as possible as not to be used, hurt, or pulled from side to side in a sea of ridiculous responsibilities that matter to everyone else except for me. I know I'm being a bit selfish here.

But in the long run, I don't ask for much. Some privacy here, a little courtesy there, and the ability to let me be unknown when I ask.

...

:iconjokerplz: Persnickitii, why so pretentious.

Let's see, I've been both busy, getting things done... and being really addicted to the computer. Seriously, I sit my ass down in my chair and suddenly it's three hours later. This needs to stop.

Let's use a bullet form to capture just what I did manage to do! Holy!

:bulletblue: Joined some of my classmates to teach basic ASL to a massive group of Japanese foreign exchange students. omg
:bulletblue: Gave my watercolor paints, some of my paper and a few of my brushes to my mother so she'll get back into painting...to find out she's still got it. Seriously, if she keeps practicing, she could create some lovely stuff.
:bulletblue: Saw 'Where The Wild Things Are'. Great movie. Odd and at times jarring, but beautifully executed without cutting corners, emotionally and visually.
:bulletblue: Been getting to know other students in my program more. It's been a slow but steady process, of which I'm grateful.
:bulletblue: Went to Goodwill and bought some gorgeous furniture decorations, a fancy trash can, some books and the two-disc edition of Amelie. All for about $20. Yes.
:bulletblue: Got complimented on a dumb sketch I did during class while waiting for my partner to finish his work. desu blush
:bulletblue: Got both my seasonal flu and swine flu shots. I'm immortal now.

Now some crap.

:bulletred: My mother is being taken advantage of by her family members, of whom we try and maintain peaceful if distant relationships with. So pissed.
:bulletred: Trying to find some cheap but decent watercolors after my favorite brand is no longer being sold. Bawww!
:bulletred: Behind on some homework and pretty apathetic about getting it done.
:bulletred: Got a friggin' painful Charlie's Horse last night in my thigh that had me whimpering and unable to sleep for hours.
:bulletred: I STILL DON'T HAVE A JOB. Or a phone jack, for that matter.
:bulletred: I feel icky for not updating anything decent lately. I do upload my sketches and little crappy things on FurAffinity, though, if you're interested in looking while I pull my shit together. It won't be for a while, just because I have a few contests I am entering as well as a small public venue I'm aiming to display my work at.

Anyways, here's my FA. Say hi if you have an account there!

Now, I have a question, since I recently got in the subject of dreams and their interpretations. I'm curious about the patterns of others. I remember most of my dreams quite vividly and among the people I know this is rather odd. Ever since I was a kid I've had many dreams about flying, losing my teeth ugh , being chased, protecting my loved ones/myself and interacting with individuals, friend or stranger, in my life. Lately I've been having a lot of surreal and cinematic dreams, occasionally involving my characters. I haven't had a nightmare in years.

Which brings me to my questions: Do you remember your dreams? Do you see a pattern in them? If possible, can you recall a dream that's really stuck with you?
